Custom backpack manufacturing

Laptop backpacks, daypacks, school bags and travel bags. The most spec-driven line we produce — every pocket, panel and zip adds labour, so the tech pack matters more here than anywhere else.

Fabric, denier and what it means

Denier is the yarn weight. Higher denier means a coarser, stronger weave — and a heavier bag to ship. The choice is a trade between abrasion resistance and freight cost.

Components that change the price

When two quotations for a "laptop backpack" differ by 60%, it is almost always these five lines — ask which ones are in and which are out.

  1. Zips. A branded coil zip and a generic one look identical in a photo and behave nothing alike after six months. Branded slider and tape add roughly 10–20% to the hardware cost, and it is the single most justified upgrade on a bag that opens daily.
  2. Padding and foam. Laptop sleeves, shoulder straps and back panels each carry their own foam. Specifying foam density prevents a bag that feels hollow at retail.
  3. Back panel construction. A flat panel, an air-mesh panel and a contoured EVA panel are three different costs and three different comfort levels.
  4. Strap hardware. Adjusters, D-rings and a sternum strap are all separate items. Webbing width matters too — 25 mm reads as a fashion bag, 38 mm reads as a technical pack.
  5. Panel count. Every additional panel or pocket is more cutting, more stitching and more chance of a fault. Reducing a 12-panel design to 8 is often the fastest way to hit a target price without downgrading the fabric.

For EU and UK sales, note that backpacks with a textile outer surface classify under a lower duty rate than handbags in the same heading — 2.7% against 3.7% into the EU, and 2.0% into the UK. Classification follows the product type first and the material second, so it is worth checking both. See the landed cost calculator.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are branded zips worth the extra cost?

On a bag that opens every day, yes. The zip is the first thing to fail and the first thing a customer complains about, and the cost difference is roughly 10–20% of the hardware line — a small fraction of the finished bag. On a promotional drawstring bag, it is not worth it.

Can you produce a backpack from my existing tech pack?

Yes, and it is the fastest route to an accurate price. Send the tech pack with a Bill of Materials and we will confirm what can be matched locally and where a substitution is required. If you have a physical sample of a competitor product, posting it is often faster than any document.

What is the difference between 600D and 1680D in the hand?

1680D ballistic nylon or polyester is denser, holds its shape better, and resists abrasion considerably longer. It is also noticeably heavier, which affects both the freight cost and how the bag feels when empty. For a laptop backpack sold above USD 40 retail, 1680D is the better signal. Below that, 600D with good hardware reads better value.

Do you produce children's backpacks?

Yes, but they carry extra obligations. In the US, children's products require CPSIA testing and tracking labels; in the EU, GPSR treats children as a vulnerable user group and the risk assessment has to account for foreseeable misuse. We can supply the material documentation, but the testing and the technical file are the brand's responsibility.

Send a tech pack, or post us a sample.

A physical reference is faster than a document. We will price against the sample you send.
